Therapy

A Workout For Your Soul

In a nutshell 🥜

  • Finding a therapist is hard! Acknowledging you might need help is harder.

  • Therapy can be transformative, fostering personal and relational growth.

  • There’s significant value in facilitating open and honest communication, both individually and within relationships.

My journey with therapy began during a particularly challenging time in my life—postpartum depression had taken its toll, and I found myself struggling to navigate the storm of emotions swirling within me. Admitting to myself that I needed help was the first hurdle, and then came the daunting task of finding a therapist.

Navigating the maze of therapy options was overwhelming. Psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor—each title seemed to come with its own expectations and qualifications. Deciphering what my Employee Assistance Program covered and whether a nurse practitioner could provide the support I needed only added to the confusion.

Despite my uncertainty, I leaped. Those initial sessions were tough. It felt like I was unpacking a lifetime of experiences in a matter of minutes, hoping that my therapist could make sense of the tangled mess within me. I longed for her to understand the complexities of my past and offer insights that could guide me through my present struggles.

Two years into my individual therapy journey, I made the executive decision to involve my husband – if I was putting in the work, why shouldn’t he? Like many, we both had previous misconceptions about couples therapy, believing it was reserved for relationships on the brink of collapse. But as we delved into our most pressing issues, we realized the immense value of having a neutral third party facilitate our conversations.

Therapy became a sanctuary—a 60-minute monthly space where we could confront the issues we had avoided for far too long, where tears were shed, and truths were spoken. It isn’t always easy, and there are ongoing moments of discomfort and vulnerability. But through it all, we are growing closer, learning to communicate more openly and empathetically.

Reflecting on my therapy journey, I've come to see it as a vital component of my overall well-being. It's not just about addressing problems when they arise but about investing in my emotional health regularly. Like tending to a garden, therapy requires time, patience, and nurturing. And while the journey may be challenging at times, the growth and healing it facilitates are invaluable.

Therapy isn't a quick fix or a one-size-fits-all solution. If you're considering therapy, know that you're not alone on the journey. It may just be the most transformative decision you ever make.

“Talking to somebody just helped me out a lot. As a man, you got a lot of slack for it… I don’t really subscribe to that. Everyone needs to unpack and talk.”
